
Bio
Dr. Michael J. Metro, MD, FACS, is a seasoned and distinguished urologist specializing in reconstructive urology, with a focus on urethral stricture disease, Peyronie's disease, male stress urinary incontinence, erectile dysfunction, cancer survivorship, and genitourinary trauma from both iatrogenic and external causes. He has been practicing in the Philadelphia region since 2002. He currently serves as a Professor of Urology at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University and is the Director of Reconstructive Urology at Temple University Hospital. His is the Vice Chair of Academic Affairs for the Department of Urology. Dr. Metro is board-certified by the American Board of Urology and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He has served as Fellowship director of the Traumatic and Reconstructive Urology Fellowship at Temple since 2018. He has trained 8 fellows to date. He co-founded the Gender Affirmation Surgery program at Temple in 2021. The program is still the leader among academic medical centers in Philadelphia.
Prior to his arrival to Temple in 2016, he served as clinical instructor for the Urology residency program at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and practiced at Albert Einstein Medical Center (now Jefferson Einstein) for over 13 years. He was recognized consistently as a master educator in the residency program and won the Clinical Instructor of the year award 11 times.
Dr. Metro earned his undergraduate degree in Biology from the University of Pittsburgh in 1992, and his medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in 1996. He completed his residency in urology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and pursued a fellowship in traumatic and reconstructive urology at the University of California San Francisco and San Francisco General Hospital.
Recognized for his expertise, he has authored numerous peer-reviewed articles and book chapters on topics such as urethral strictures, erectile dysfunction, Peyronie’s disease, and urologic trauma. He has presented, and has been invited to speak, at numerous regional, national and international meetings. He is an active member with International Volunteers of Urology and has led Reconstructive Urology teams to complete surgical mission trips to Ulan Baatar, Mongolia yearly since 2018. Dr. Metro has been consistently acknowledged as a "Top Doctor" in Urology by Philadelphia magazine from 2006 through 2025.
